Abortion isn’t a distraction.
I’m so sick of people calling things like abortion or gay marriage a “distraction from the bigger issues, like the fact that we have troops deployed over seas.”
Not only do those social issues actually fucking matter to the people they affect, and the people that care about them, but it’s that kind of fucked up logic of “we can’t worry about you, we need to worry about what I see as the most important issue” that contributes to the “bigger issues” like war, or drone bombings.
When you say “the fact that you can’t get easy access to an abortion is less important than the fact that we’re killing people with drones,” it’s basically the same as the people making the big decisions saying “look, the fact that we’re killing people is less important than the fact that we’re protecting Americans.”
So if you think “hey, don’t vote on social issues because we have real problems” you need to understand that you and the line of thinking you’re promoting are contributing to what you see as “real problems.”
If you don’t care about everybody, you don’t care about anybody.
